Jars of Clay "Sad Clown"

So I'm sitting here studying and listening to music, and found this song on my computer...yes I have songs on my computer that I've never heard. But listen to this song and tell me that it's not good...Here are the lyrics too:
Say how's the weather, so I look out the window
To brighten my soul, but I can't control the rain
That keeps falling
Smile on the outside that never comes in
A comedy, mystery, irony, tragedy
So I scream "let the show begin"

You break me open, turn on the light
Stumble inside with me, with me

Do I entertain you?
Do I preoccupy you with my wit to cover this lie?
Are you mesmerized?
Do you think me faithful, do you think me a clown?
I picked out this shirt, I put on this hat
I wore all this paint just for you

You break me open, turn on the light
Stumble inside with me, with me

I don't get it!

I can never find the hidden meaning in songs and poems though.

Hey there. I don't know if you'll ever see this, Courtney, but I've been a long time fan of Jars of Clay. I've always thought the song was about how we try to impress God or the people in our lives, while we're really hurting inside. We put on a fake smile, talk about shallow things, and pretend like we have it all together, all so we don't have to face the struggles we go through.

The irony is, we go through all this trouble, thinking we'll maintain relationships, while never actually allowing them to grow.

Deep song, poetic lyrics, challenging premise.
